Galway County, Ireland - Galway Races
Our Galway equestrian pillow is named after the Galway Races in County Galway, Ireland. A horse racing festival that takes place the last week of July, Galway Races are a highlight of Irish Equestrian sport. Galway Races are held at Ballybrit Race Course and feature the Galway Plate and Galway Hurdle Thoroughbred Horse Races. The Galway Races are a social highlight of the year, and people from all over the globe turn out to enjoy the seven days of thoroughbred horse racing.
Ballybrit Race Course and Irish Thoroughbred Horse Racing have a long history in County Galway. The first recorded horse race occurred in the 13th century, and was called a "horse match". The current location of Ballybrit Race Course came about over 100 years ago, when land was donated by Lord St Lawrence. Since that time, many great steeplechase horses and flat runners have been tested on the grounds. Horses such as Tipperary Boy, Fair Richard, Liberator, Drogheda, and East Galway have claimed championships during the Galway Races.
